It was very different from other zoo's I have been to. It looked rather small from the outside (vs the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, Louisiana) but don't let outward appearances deceive you! No, it wasn't as large as the Audubon Zoo, but it did boast a wide array of animals. Many of the animals were very close to the pedestrian walkways, which gave it a more intimate feel. They also had many buildings where you could 'warm up' and get a closer look at some of the animals. It is built on the side of a mountain, and has many switchbacks in the walkways.
The drive up to the zoo is as gorgeous as the zoo itself. Winding roads through expensive, mountainside neighborhoods. And the deer! The deer crossing signs are there for a reason! We saw a deer trying to break INTO an iron fence around one house. Then you see the zoo! The entrance reminded me of Disney World. Without the millions of people and long wait lines of course.
When you pay your entrance fee, you receive a token. These are used to 'vote' for your favorite branch of animal conservation that the zoo offers. There are large glass cases with pictures of animals and coin slots. The coin slots are linked to containers at the bottom of the case. When you put your coin in, it goes through a myriad of twists, turns, and jumps. It was like those gumball machines where your gumball passes through a maze before it gets to the opening. I always think of the breakfast scene from Pee Wee's Big Adventure.
I, of course, voted for the penguins!
A very young child said this was a girl giraffe. Her mother asked her how she knew. Because she has eyelashes.
I look forward to visiting the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo again!
