Pelicans, Oysters, and Crabs -- Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge

Blinking the sleep from my eyes, I slowly got out of bed. Up before the sun. Loading the truck with my net and an ice chest. Trying to contain the excitement of the day. I was going crabbing.  With my Mom.  Something about watching the sunrise, flip flops, and a fishing pole, just makes my day.  Even if it is overcast and unseasonably chilly.

We launched the boat at Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge. If you've ever been there, you know about the abundance of alligators.  They can be seen close to the usual crabbing and fishing spots.  Sometimes not so patiently waiting for and opportunity to steal your bait, your catch, or you.

The water was low.  Not many people were out on the water that day.  We met the rest of our group at one of the concrete weirs.  Baited the nets and lines, and threw them in.  Mom stares at the lines to see if they move.  I just walk away and wait to check them.

Because the water was so low, many of the oysters were exposed.  While I'm not an oyster fan, it was fascinating to see some people shuck and eat them right there!

Crabbing was slow that day.  The alligators non-existant.  Pelicans everywhere.  Brown ones. White ones.  I love pelicans!

As we left the weir and headed back to to boat launch, little birdie footprints on various parts of the boat were reminders of what a calm day it was out on the water at Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge with my Mom.
