As we pulled our MX-5 into The Mitty, the smells of race day slowly passing through our convertible, I was a little girl again. With my dad. Wishing he was there.
We parked our car in the "Mazda Car Corral" with various other types of Mazda's and many, many MX-5's. It was our first time at The Mitty. One we'll never forget.
This year, Mazda was the feature marquis. Along with other vendors, Flyin' Miata was on hand to provide insight into the many mods they offer for MX-5's. From V8's to turbo's, sway bars to exhaust, FM has pretty much everything you could ever need to mod your Miata.
Over the years of owning a Mazda Miata, I've gotten to know the crew over at Flyin' Miata. They are an amazing bunch. Vast technical know-how and great customer service. I mean, what other vendor calls you after you order a supercharger? A tool? A small fastener? FM does. They care. It shows.
We rode around the Autocross track with Brandon Fitch from FM in Nancy (their supercharged NC Miata). Rode in Igor with Bill Cardell (the Big Dog at FM). Sat in on tech sessions about V8 conversions and the FMII (FM's flagship turbo system). We enjoyed the qualifying/practice sessions around the track and were able to participate in a 'Parade Lap' and drive our car on the track at Road Atlanta. This little girl's dream come true!
Saturday brought more people, more cars, more RACING! I love the smell of race fuel in the morning.
The big feature race of the weekend was the MX-5 Playboy Cup. These guys came to race, and it was nothing short of amazing!
Sunday morning we found a fuel leak under our supercharger. It was the 'substandard fuel line' we put in when reinstalling it on the 95 (not the original lines from the kit). It wasn't holding up to what it was rated for. Flyin' Miata once again came to our rescue and let us borrow their tools (they diagnosed a bad coil pack when we were traveling to Yellowstone last year).
Once again I was that little girl from all those years ago. Working on my car while the race went on around me. I felt like I was in a Nascar pit crew. I mean, who removes a supercharger in the middle of a field while a race is going on?! With new fuel line in place, and new o-rings for the fuel injectors, we reinstalled the blower and fired up the car. I think that's what the car had been needing for a long time. It appears we had a vacuum leak from using the stock seats on the fuel injectors. (Sorry for breaking into "car-talk", I couldn't help myself)
It was our first Mitty, but will definitely not be our last. I love the track at Road Atlanta. The energy, the people, the cars! My camera loved it too. And it's always great to see my friends from Flyin' Miata!
