Brandon has taken over the blog today!! Here's some helpful info if you're upgrading your Mazdaspeed 3! (of course, I helped too - I can't help but to dive in and get myself dirty on car projects! And someone had to take photos ;)
The gen 2 Mazdaspeed3 factory fuel pump internals are only capable of safely providing fuel for an intake and a tune. Past that, running more mods could cause the engine to self destruct. Obviously this is a necessary project. While it's not a very difficult one, cleanliness is absolutely critical. If you get one grain of grit in the fuel pumps piston assembly, the whole thing will fail.
The engine bay with battery box removed
This is the little guy I was trying to get to. At this point it's only a matter of removing fuel lines, a clip, and three bolts.
The camshaft driven fuel pump mounted in a vice. You really can't do this project without a good vice.
The piston removed. The fuel pump replacement parts increase the size of the piston.
The piston sleeve.
It's recommended to completely disassemble the fuel pump and diligently clean everything with a non-chlorinated contact cleaner.
Small pieces. Notice the 32mm wrench I had to purchase just for this project. This thing is huge and cost me $26 for a wrench that I will probably never use again.
Fuel line fitting cavity.
Fuel line fitting.
All the parts nice and clean after a lot of work.
The new Autotech Internals. Placing the new internals into the piston retainer sleeve.
Piston installed.
All finished!
I've taken datalogs before and after the upgraded internals. Prior to them, I was dipping into the low 1600psi area. After the upgrade, it never drops below 1750psi. All clear to install the Cobb downpipe that's sitting in the box. I can't wait for the extra power!!
