Scales, Numbers, and Chili - Recipe Review

I have a fascination with numbers. Always have. Anything mathematical has always been my favorite subject. Even in college - I had way more math credits than I needed for my degree lol!!

A great kitchen tool is a food scale. Not only does it help you measure ingredients for cooking, it keeps your portion sizes right on! We've been wanting one for a while, and finally got one yesterday!!! My inner number fanatic showed herself and I was weighing everything.

Kitchen Scale

In honor of my new pretty kitchen scale, I want to share my favorite healthy chili recipe!!

It's Jamie Eason's 3-Bean Turkey Chili and it's AWESOME!!!! (click the link for the full recipe)
Seriously. There are not enough exclamation points in the world to show how much I love this chili.

Mine is technically only 2 - bean, but other than that I don't make any radical changes to her recipe. I do add low-sodium chicken broth and leave out the adobo sauce (because I haven't found it yet!)

After browning your lean ground turkey with onions and garlic, add diced chilies, kidney beans (drained), black beans (drained), and diced tomatoes (do not drain).

Ingredients - Beans

I use these beans because the ingredients read "beans and water". The organic tomatoes are the same - the fewer the ingredients, the better!

Ingredients - Organic Diced Tomatoes

Stir in the rest of the spices (save the cilantro for right before serving)

Simmer, and you're done! Don't forget to add the cilantro about 5 minutes before serving. I like to add some low-sodium chicken broth to thin it out a little and make it more like the chili I grew up with (1/2 to 1 cup, depending on how it looks).

Ingredients - Cilantro

You can get creative with sides - whole wheat toast, veggies, sweet potato... you name it! We usually mix in a cup of brown rice for our pre-workout meal, and have a side of veggies if it's a post-workout meal!

Best. Chili. Ever.
